~JB, Nothing like burning the midnight oil for a Braves blog.
This post comes a little late since I’ve been running around all day long and haven’t had time to get it published yet. But I finally crunched all the numbers and I’m ready to reveal the results of my head to head game between the 2008 AL All Stars and my own All Braves All Time Dream All Star Team… I wanted to see how many times I could fit the word “all” into this post. Anyone keeping count?
This isn’t really a sim game. It’s actually my version of a Fantasy baseball matchup. Since last night’s game wasn’t a traditional nine inning game, I had to take some liberties with the scoring system but here’s how it went down.
I took the best All Star Performances of my Braves All Star team and totaled them up on the point system I created based on a standard Fantasy format.
I also took the best position players’ performances in hitting from the 2008 AL All Stars and totaled their points as well. For AL pitching, I used the pitchers’ stats to equal nine innings and matched them against my Braves starting five also for nine innings of pitching.
Still with me?
Since last nights affair was a 15 inning marathon I limited the AL to 27 AB’s (A nine inning game) but had to include 4 additional Hank Aaron AB’s to also give my Braves team 27 AB’s.
For the pitchers, I used the following points system.
IP= +1 p/inning
K= +3
SV/W= +2
H= -1
R=-2
HR=-3
SB= -1
BB= -1
For any nitpickers out there, I did subtract an inning and a hit from Smoltz’s 1996 appearance to make it an even nine and I added 2/3 of an inning to Mariano Rivera’s stats to make an even nine. It’s inconsequential but just to be fair. So here’s how my Braves pitching staff and the AL pitching staff did in 9 innings of All Star work.

Cliff Lee 2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3K’s W1 11 points Joe Saunders 1 IP, 1 H, 0 points Roy Halladay 1 IP, 1 H, 1K 3 points Ervin Santana 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 K’s, 1 HR, 1 point Justin Duchscherer 1 IP, 3 H’s, 1 R, 2 K’s 1 point Jonathan Papelbon 1 IP, 3 H’s, 1 R, 2 K’s 3 points Mariano Rivera 2 IP’s, 2 H’s, 1 BB, 2 K’s, S 1 7 points Total-26 Points- 3 ER’s allowed

Warren Spahn 1961 3 IP, 0,0,0 3 K’s, 0 ER W 1 14 points Tom Glavine 1991 2 IP, 1 H, 3 K’s, 0 ER 10 points John Smotltz 1996 1 IP, 1H, 1 K, 0 ER, 1 SB 3 points Maddux 1998 2 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB 0 points Phil Niekro 1969 1 IP, 1 SV, 2 K’s, 0 ER 10 points Total-37 points- 0 ER’s allowed

And now the batting stats for 27 AB’s (including walks) using the following score system.
HR=+4
3B=+3
2B=+2
1B=+1
RBI= +2
H=+1
R=+2
BB=+1
K= -2
Didn’t reach base= -4
Another note here. Even though I’m adamantly opposed to the DH, I added Andruw Jones’ 2003 performance ( a phenomenal one) for the pitcher’s spot. In truth, this makes more sense anyways because All Star games rarely if ever allow pitchers to hit.

So there you have it. My dream team easily out pitches and out hits the AL All Stars of 2008 in nine innings of baseball. If you enjoyed this post and the All Time Braves All Stars, you may enjoy my Worst Braves Team as well. Let me know if you have any thoughts or additions to any of these teams.
We will have Braves baseball again to start the second half on 7:30 pm Friday July 18th at home against the Washington “This Time For Sure We’ll Beat Them” Nationals. And my favorite rookie sensation Jair “Where’s My All Star Invite?” Jurrjens will be on the mound.
Keep Choppin’ my friends!

Ah…that’s great!
Now…Technically I root against all other teams in the AL since I am a Red Sox fan. But you know for the All Star game and for home field advantage in the World Series…gotta root for them then!
You have some great people on your Braves All Time: Phil Niekro, Warren Spahn (whom I use all the time when playing MLB 08)

For only the fifth time in American League history, a second baseman has been selected as the league’s Most Valuable Player. From Woodland, California, Dustin Pedroia has been a consistent spark plug for the Boston Red Sox all year long. What he does for Boston is what short-term installment loans can do for you when you’re experiencing temporary financial difficulties. The mark Pedroia made during his 2007 American League Rookie season was a strong indication that Beantown had a talented second baseman on their side. Yet no one was ready for the kind of numbers he knocked out. The 5-8, 180 pound Pedroia has a .326 batting average, 83 runs batted in, 54 doubles, only 52 strikeouts in 653 at bats, and 20-for-21 in stolen bases. But that’s just the offensive side of the ball. Pedroia had also won the league’s Gold Glove award. Clearly, Boston’s second sacker was conveniently there for the team when they needed him. Quite similar to installment loans, he is also no-hassle and provides powerful, effective service. Short-term installment loans can provide you the financial help you need when you need it.
