Dome, Dome, on the Range…

I got my cup of coffee. It’s Sunday. And the Braves are on. Time for the good ol’ American sport of… what the hell?!!?

Why do I just love it when the Braves play the Blue Jays you ask?

Why do I just get so darned excited about playing this game of “baseball” they call it up here in Ontario?

Well first of all, everyone knows some of the best baseball should be played in front of Canadian audiences. A crowd gathers indoors after collectively shrugging their shoulders to resort to watching a sporting event because “The Leafs are done ’til fall, eh!”

Then there’s that atrocious removable dome. If I’m like every other true baseball fan, I believe that the crack of the bat should not echo around throughout the indoor arena while we’re all protected from the evil sun and the dangers of Mother Nature. And who doesn’t like watching baseball played on a choice of turf so much less bothersome than actual grass? I mean don’t you just love watching the ball bounce around or see a hot grounder defiantly scoot right into the wall?

And of course, I hate interleague play. Say what you will about how it’s “good for attendance” and “good for baseball” but to purists like me (and unapologetic ones at that) nothing bastardizes baseball more (except possibly the previous items I mentioned… or Bud Selig himself). I hate that we spent the better part of a century and a half playing baseball one way and then all of a sudden the NL’s playing the AL, Milwaukee’s in the NL again, human sacrafice, cats and dogs…. living together…. MASS HYSTERIA! (First place prize to the reader who can identify that quote).

Call me Crash Davis but I hate watching the Braves employ the DH and I hate watching them play on ” ‘Ront-o Turf” (TM). I grew up watching NL baseball and hoping some day we’d get to play AL baseball in the World Series but now the whole experience is cheapened. Plus, say what you will but the DH changes the game and not for the better in my opinion.

That’s my rant for the day. It comes as we close out Interleague play for the year, until the All Star Game and World Series of course. But thank goodness we don’t have to see the Blue Jays or their ugly black “Jays” uni’s, (or the powder blues… excuse me while I vomit).

Yet, it is with no tearful farewells or “HAGS” that we will depart from the Great White. Good luck keeping the cellar warm, Blue Jays.

Welcome back, Cito.

Keep Choppin’
